Why in the world would a good agent spend time chasing down leads for a renters policy that costs less than $10 a month?  Many agents have asked that question and rightly so.  The reality is that renters insurance is one of the less competitive lines out there.  While the policy might not bring a big commission it can lead to a lot more business which is why we recommend chasing this low hanging fruit.  While you can buy and generate some good leads online we prefer to focus on offline lead generation. 

Cross Selling Opportunities
Cross selling is the name of the game with renters.  Once you’ve worked your leads and obtained some sales the work has just begun.  Renters insurance is the gateway line to bigger policies and word of mouth referrals.  Contact your  renters clients at every opportunity, don’t miss a chance to cross sell and don’t be afraid to ask for a referral.

Recommended Lead Acquisition Methods
Lead Generation - We recommend targeting large high end apartment complexes as your primary prospect set.  The goal here is to create a positive relationship with the apartment management and/or owner so that you can market to current tenants as well as future tenants.  Most complexes will have an agent or two that they recommend for renters insurance and you want to be on that list.  These recommendations are typically formed through relationships so it is your job to figure out who you need to influence to get your name on the list.  To connect with current tenants we highly recommend old fashioned door hanger promotion.  Custom door hangers can be ordered from various vendors online and off and are relatively cheap.  Door hangers are most effective with complexes that do not have strict proof of insurance requirements prior to signing a lease.

Lead Buying - Internet renters leads are a fair option but we typically focus on self generation for this line.
